Students from EMC Elementary School and Souderton Area High School collaborated to create 4 Little Free Libraries™ to benefit students and families in Souderton and Telford boroughs. This project was fully funded through a grant from the Indian Valley Education Foundation.
Students in the Tech Ed department under the guidance of Ken Meyers worked on this project for the second semester at SAHS. The students were given the challenge of designing their own library. Each student created drawings of their project. The top four designs were then shared with teachers at EMC. The students then created prototypes of the four designs. The students from the Tech Ed department brought their prototypes to EMC and presented them to the first graders. The first graders voted on their favorite design. All four designs were chosen. Students at the High School were then given the task to work together to create life size libraries. When the work was close to completion the High School students returned to EMC and worked with the first graders to assemble the libraries.
The posts for each library were installed on June 1st. Installation of the libraries will follow. The first library is a school bus and will reside at EMC Elementary School. The three other libraries are: a train caboose that will be at the Indian Valley Boys and Girls Club, a castle at the Purple Park on Summit St. in Telford and a robot to be placed at the Souderton Community Pool.
Each of the libraries will house a selection of children's and adult books. Community members are encouraged to "Take a book-Return a book". Each library will have a steward who will look after the library and make sure that there are always books available.
This project was created to make sure that children will have books available to them at all times.
