Souderton, PA – With the anticipated Governor’s budget proposal on the horizon (February 7), school board members and school administrators in Montgomery County will address issues and concerns about education funding as well as property tax elimination before the budget negotiations begin. School districts are preparing their 2017-18 budgets with no certainty about next year’s education funding levels. School districts continue to face rising mandated costs on all fronts. Pension costs, healthcare costs, charter and cyber charter school costs and special education costs have outpaced increases in state education funding over the past two years, and school districts continue to struggle to pay for these costs without impacting the quality of education their students receive.
A press conference to express concerns about education funding and a legislative proposal being introduced in Harrisburg to eliminate property taxes. This press conference will provide a good opportunity to get a clearer picture of the major cost drivers impacting our school districts, what the local effects of property tax elimination might look like and what it means for both taxpayers and students.
